Waterproofing Requirements for Wet Areas in Queensland

When it comes to tiling in wet areas, especially in Queensland, waterproofing is a critical component. The Australian Standards set clear guidelines for waterproofing in wet areas to prevent water damage and ensure the longevity of the construction. Here’s what you need to know about waterproofing in relation to the screed in these areas:

Australian Standards for Waterproofing:

  • The Australian Standard AS 3740-2010, “Waterproofing of domestic wet areas,” sets the requirements for waterproofing in areas like bathrooms and laundries.

Waterproofing Location – Under or Over the Screed:

  1. Traditional Practice: Traditionally, waterproofing is often applied over the screed. This method involves laying the waterproof membrane over the screed, then tiling on top of this membrane.
  2. Alternative Method: In some cases, waterproofing beneath the screed is also practiced. This method involves applying the waterproofing layer directly onto the substrate, then adding the screed and tiles on top.

Queensland-Specific Requirements:

  • In Queensland, as per the AS 3740-2010, waterproofing is generally recommended over the screed. This is because waterproofing over the screed provides a direct barrier between the water and the tiles, reducing the risk of water ingress and damage.
  • However, specific project requirements, building designs, or preferences might lead to waterproofing beneath the screed. This is often the case in situations where additional moisture barriers are needed or when specific tile types are used.
